The New York Yankees annually honored this World War ll African-American USAF group who fought the powers on two fronts, one on bombing missions in the European theater and North Africa; the other in segregation at home. Their performance earned the airmen more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses and greatly assisted in the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces. I relished the honor of escorting the airmen on the field at the. e Stadium during pre-game ceremonies.
